Sony’s latest exclusive has beaten Animal Crossing: New Horizons to become the fastest-selling video game of 2020.

Despite all the review-bombing from people that haven’t played it, those that have bought The Last Of Us Part 2 have ensured it’s become the fastest-selling game of the year, beating Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Switch.

Most importantly for Sony, it’s the biggest launch of a PlayStation 4 exclusive all generation, although it only beat fellow Naughty Dog game Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End by 1%.

However, since these charts only ever include physical sales there’s a good chance that The Last Of Us Part 2’s lead was even greater once digital is added to the equation.

Day one sales of The Last Of Us Part 2 were up 76% on the first game on PlayStation 3, although that’s perhaps not a useful comparison as the original was a brand new IP and the PlayStation 3 was nowhere near as successful a console as the PlayStation 4.

Either way though, it’s the biggest video game launch of the year, beating Animal Crossing by a massive 40%. Although an unusually large percentage of sales for Nintendo’s game were digital.

By coincidence, this is the first week since launch that Animal Crossing has fallen out of the top 10, although in second place Ring Fit Adventure saw sales rise by 31%, as stock continues to increase.

There were no new releases other than The Last Of Us, but the arrival of the first Pokémon Sword/Shield expansion pack saw a 51% increase in its sales, compared to the previous week.

Chart-Track counts them as separate games though, so the only obvious sign of the increase is Pokémon Sword at number nine.

With no major new releases out this week, The Last Of Us Part 2 is likely to retain the top spot for a while yet. In fact, there’s a good chance it’ll last all the way until Ghost Of Tsushima – Sony’s final big PlayStation 4 exclusive – in mid-July.
