Sport Ireland have said that FIFA support the work of the Governance Review Group that is shaping the reform of the FAI.

Officials from FIFA met Sport Ireland representatives today after holding talks with the FAI yesterday.

FIFA are seeking to ensure that the autonomy of the FAI is protected during the process with their rules placing limits on permitted levels of government intervention in football matters.

A brief statement from Sport Ireland this afternoon said that FIFA are now informed of the plans of the governance group, made up of Sport Ireland nominees and FAI reps Rea Walshe and Niamh O’Donoghue.

The Sport Ireland statement said:

“Sport Ireland had a very productive meeting with representatives of FIFA this morning.

“The FIFA representatives received an update on the Governance Review Group, which has been established by Sport Ireland and the FAI. The FIFA representatives expressed their full support for the work of the Governance Group.

“It was agreed that FIFA will be kept fully updated on all matters relating to the work and output of the Group.”
